Daewoo shipyard partners with defense company to develop lithium battery-based energy storage device

SEOUL -- Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, a major shipbuilder in South Korea, joined hands with Hanwha Defense, a total defense solutions provider, for the development of a lithium-ion battery-based energy storage system that can reduce fuel use and emissions of pollutants generated by ships.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) said Tuesday that lithium battery-based energy storage devices are seen as a next-generation ship energy source along with fuel cells. The two companies would develop products capable of controlling generators and power loads in optimal conditions.

The energy storage system (ESS) has emerged as an effective means to establish stable and efficient systems for power demand and supply. Energy storage demand is growing thanks to the global transition from carbon-intensive energy sources to natural gas and renewable source solutions.

To make the shipboard power system more reliable, the integration of energy storage systems is an effective solution. Lithium-ion is one of the most used type battery in fully electric zero-emission ferries with the shorter route.
