SEOUL -- Drones were found to be effective in detecting the emission of industrial air pollutants in a three-month inspection that began in November last year.

The environment ministry said on Thursday that 36 drones, 18 mobile vehicles and two unmanned aerial vehicles were mobilized to check 814 facilities and detect some 290 emission violations. The inspection will end in March to cover all major industrial complexes in South Korea.

The ministry said on Thursday that inspection teams have detected 289 cases of emission violations at 227 facilities. In many cases, facilities have not used proper emission-prevention systems.

Backed by 5G and 4G mobile communication infrastructure, drones are widely used by government bodies and civic organizations in South Korea to monitor air pollution, traffic, bush fires and illegal activities.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries disclosed plans to deploy drones for the surveillance of illegal fishing and red tide.
