SK E&C develops window-type solar power generating system for first time in S. Korea

SEOUL -- SK Engineering & Construction, the infrastructure-building wing of South Korea's SK Group, has developed a window-type solar power generation system that can be installed on windows of apartment and office buildings. It comes with an electricity distribution system that can send stored electricity back into homes and offices.

SK E&C said in a statement on August 18 that its new solar power generating system used film-type solar panels that are up to 40 percent transparent. "We will contribute to the popularization of zero-energy buildings through our window-type solar power generation system," an SK E&C official was quoted as saying.

A zero-energy building is a building with zero net energy consumption. It normally gets half or more energy from the power grid and returns the same amount over the course of a year. SK E&C's window-type solar power generator comes with a monitoring tool that can be interlinked to a home network. The tool will allow home dwellers to check the electricity production of homes in real-time.

Conventional solar power systems were installed on roofs or walls of building to collect sunlight. However, such systems required a lot of space to maximize generating efficiency. Because such systems take up a lot of space, it was hard for individual households to operate one.

To reduce greenhouse gas and consumption of energy created with fossil fuels, South Korea's construction industry focuses on building zero-energy buildings or ones that can save up to 80 percent of energy annually. South Korea will make it compulsory for building companies to gradually adopt construction methods for zero-energy buildings by 2025.
