SEOUL -- A state-sponsored research body in South Korea claimed to have achieved a breakthrough in transparent solar photovoltaic technologies by developing a highly efficient solar module that can be applied to windows, soundproof walls, and electric car sunroofs.

The Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI) said it has developed a transparent luminescent solar component (LSC) module. Researchers have tried to develop transparent LSCs that can be placed on the glass to harvest solar energy. LSC collects radiation over a large area, converting it by fluorescence and directing the generated radiation into a relatively small output target.

"Quantum dot is a key future material. Through this technology development, we have confirmed that it can be applied not only to displays but also to transparent solar cells," KETI's display research center head Han Chul-jong said. "This technology will have great business feasibility and social ripple effects." The project involved academic and corporate research bodies, including LG Chem.

Many companies are in the race to develop clean energy generating devices including a building integrated photovoltaic system. SK Engineering & Construction showcased a window-type solar power generation system on August 18.
