SEOUL -- Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, a key contractor in South Korea's energy industry, has been selected to provide its pressurizer for the heat exchange system of a fusion reactor to be built under an international project to provide mankind with a limitless energy source. Financial terms were not given.

Doosan Heavy said that it has formed a consortium with Doosan Babcock, a subsidiary based in Britain, to secure a contract for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) that will be built in Cadarache, France. Seven countries including South Korea, the United States, China and EU members have been involved in the ITER project.

Doosaid said in a statement that the pressurizer to be provided by 2022 would maintain pressure and perform overpressure protection in ITER's heat exchange system. "The order has once again recognized the design and production capacity of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction's power generation facilities worldwide," Vice President Na Ki-yong was quoted as saying.

Fusion power, generated by nuclear fusion, has long been spotlighted as a safe next-generation power source capable of reducing radioactivity. However, commercialization has a long way to go because it's extremely difficult to produce a state of controlled fusion. A tokamak to be housed in a seven-story structure in reinforced concrete is an experimental machine designed to harness the energy of fusion.
