SEOUL -- CU, a domestic convenience store chain operator, has launched a monthly subscription service for discount coupons. Customers can select product categories to receive discount coupons and vouchers for a small fee of about 2,000 won ($1.77).

Monthly and weekly subscription services that provide meal kits, ready-to-eat meal packages, lunchboxes or door-to-door laundry pickups became popular in South Korea this year among young consumers and single households who look for affordable services. Many consumers find subscription services convenient as they do not have to make choices to select menus or stores.

CU said in a statement on November 5 that customers can now subscribe to the convenience store chain's discount coupons. Vouchers will be issued through CU's smartphone app. Using the subscription service, a customer can save more money from buying some 110 selected products.

Subscription services that provide discount vouchers or extra cash reward points are popular at online shopping malls. Naver, the operator of South Korea's largest web portal, offers extra shopping reward points for a fee of about 5,000 won to customers who shop at Naver's online stores.

Online shopping malls Auction and Gmarket, operated by eBay Korea, also provide popular premium subscription services called "Smile Club" that offers huge discount rates for a wide range of products including groceries and home appliances. There are more than 1.3 million Smile Club subscribers.
