SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics and IBM joined forces to develop solution models for corporate digital transformation combining technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, 5G and edge computing that would help companies save costs and increase work efficiency through automation.

Digital transformation (DX) uses the Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data and cloud. DX is preferred by many companies to reduce operating costs and increased work efficiency. Swedish home-furnishing company Ikea is often cited as a good example of digital transformation.

Samsung said in a statement uploaded onto its news blog on December 16 that its 5G mobile devices and end-to-end enterprise mobile network solutions would be combined with IBM's network management, hybrid cloud and edge computing as well as industry solutions driven by AI.

"The goal is to develop open, hybrid cloud solutions that enable enterprises to draw greater insights from data at the edge -- from the factory floor to an oil rig or a regular office space -- to improve operational performance, increase worker safety, and minimize downtime," Samsung said.

They would create a private 5G network combined with hybrid cloud technologies and an edge platform to help companies swiftly deploy dedicated 5G networks to increase work efficiency and flexibly manage businesses remotely. Samsung said the two companies would develop enterprise business models using private 5G or 4G networks and 5G mobile devices with industrial internet-of-things (IIoT) solutions.

Private 5G networks are preferred by companies that operate automated smart factories and farms. All machines and sensors are connected to a dedicated 5G network to communicate, share large-sized data and interact with other networks while maintaining high-security and high-stability. Private networks for enterprises mainly utilize edge computing which is a computing infrastructure established close to the sources of data such as IoT devices and machines inside a smart factory..
