SEOUL -- A state research institute has opened an artificial intelligence research hub that would assist manufacturers in researching technology, improving operation, and educating workers. The adoption of artificial intelligence by small and medium-sized companies would help accelerate their digital transformation.

Digital transformation (DX) is a global trend in many industrial sectors including manufacturing, service and logistics that normally rely on outdated work processes using the human workforce. DX allows companies to reduce time and costs while improving the efficiency of work by simplifying work and using autonomous robots to complete simple and repetitive tasks.

The Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), a state research body, said in a statement uploaded onto its news blog on January 5 that the institute has opened "AI Innovation Park," an industry-university research campus, through a state project. "Smart innovation in the industry will change the future of the southeast sector of South Korea," UNIST President Lee Yong-hoon was quoted as saying.

The AI research hub will use big data, network and AI technologies to beef up the production capabilities of manufacturers based in the southern port city of Ulsan. The campus will commence AI lectures for manufacturers in February, focusing on solving problems commonly found at industrial sites.

UNIST will provide systematic support for SMEs from various industries. UNIST's AI Innovation Park will offer incubating space for ventures and startups. Small-sized companies will be given benefits such as special lectures and the chance to cooperate with UNIST researchers in the development of products.
