SEOUL -- A homemade science fiction film starring popular actor Song Joong-ki and actress Kim Tae-ri will be released on Netflix. The world's top over-the-top platform is now one of the main content channels that provide easy access to  Hallyu (Korean cultural wave) content for global fans.

Netflix said that "Space Sweepers" directed by Jo Seung-hee will hit the OTT platform globally on February 5. The film was to be released in mid-2020 but it was postponed due to a COVID-19 pandemic.

Hollywood sci-fi movies such as the 2014 film "Interstellar" directed by Christopher Nolan and the 2013 film "Gravity" directed by Alfonso Cuarón are popular among South Korean moviegoers but homemade ones were shunned for the lack of plot and flimsy special effects.

Space Sweepers starring Song, famous in Asia for his appearance in the 2016 TV series "Descendants of the Sun," and Kim, a 30-year-old actress who took main roles in "Handmaiden" and "Mister Sunshine," depicts a story about a team of space debris salvagers finding itself in an unexpected perilous situation after the team encounters a humanoid robot.
