SKT partners with state power company to use renewable energy for 5G control towers

SEOUL -- SK Telecom, a unit of South Korea's SK Group, has partnered with KEPCO, a state company, to use renewable energy for 5G communication control towers. The partnership is part of the group's campaign to achieve zero emissions by 2050.

SK Telecom (SKT) and KEPCO signed an agreement to use 44.6-gigawatt hours of renewable energy annually for two ICT Infracenters in Seoul and Seongnam, a southeastern satellite city. KEPCO will issue a certificate that verifies electricity used at 5G control towers. Using renewable energy is a vital element of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) management, a trendy corporate operation method that focuses on the use of green energy and environmentally-friendly management.

"While we contribute to the reduction of the emission of greenhouse gas by using renewable energy, we will accelerate our company's ESG management by adopting eco-friendly information communication technology," SKT's corporate center head Yun Poong-young said in a statement on February 22.

In December 2020, SK Group, the country's third-largest conglomerate, joined Renewable Energy 100 (RE100), a global initiative that brings together the world's most influential enterprises committed to using 100 percent renewable energy by 2050.
