SEOUL -- South Korea's mobile carrier LG Uplus has partnered with operators of a port in a southern industrial city to set up a 5G-connected remote-controlled container crane system. The system's control tower can operate cranes with very little network latency.
LG Uplus (U+) is one of South Korea's top tech companies that digitally transform old infrastructure into a new connected digital hub that can reduce labor costs and increase work efficiency. The mobile carrier began setting up the same connected container crane system at the port of Busan, South Korea's main maritime gateway, in May 2021.
LGU+said in a statement that the company would set up a 5G connected container crane system at Yeosu Gwangyang Port some 300 kilometers (186 miles) south of Seoul. The system will use multi-access edge computing (MEC) technology to minimize network latency so that operators can accurately control machinery in real-time.
MEC processes data through small-sized data centers built on mobile communication base stations. Using the remote control system, crane pilots can stack containers higher and faster. LGU+ predicted that the port's work efficiency will increase by up to 40 percent.
