SEOUL -- The operator of Busan Port, the world's fifth-largest port, will develop an artificial intelligence-based device to prevent drowsy driving. The device will monitor drivers in real-time and warn them if they fall asleep.

A yard tractor is a large vehicle that carries containers and cargo around port facilities. Data released by the National Assembly in 2020 shows that 86 accidents, involving two fatal yard tractor accidents, took place at the Busan Port some 326 kilometers (202 miles) southeast of Seoul between 2015 and 2020.

The Busan Port Authority (BPA) said in a statement on August 29 that it will jointly develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-based drowsy driving prevention device for yard tractors with IS Technology, a domestic automatic video solution company. Through a pilot program, BPA will install the monitoring device into some 96 trucks in early September. The AI device monitors drivers' eye movement in real-time and warns them by sounding alarms or vibrating a drivers' seat. The device is capable of continuously upgrading itself through a deep learning system, a self-learning system for AIs.

After the Busan Port has been selected by the government to go through a digital transformation into a smart unmanned port logistics system in 2020, BPA has worked with mobile carrier LG Uplus to use 5G technologies to prevent safety accidents. BPA will also apply LG Uplus' 5G-connected remote control technology to cranes in 2022.
