South Korea successfully launched a rocket from the Naro Space Center in the southwestern part of the country on Jan. 30, the science minister said.

The Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1 (KSVL-1), also known as Naro, reached its target altitude following its liftoff at 4 p.m., said Minister of Education, Science and Technology Lee Ju-ho.

The launch marked the country's third attempt to join the global space club after two launch attempts in 2009 and 2010 ended in failures.
