President-elect Park Geun-hye said on Feb. 7 that if North Korea pushes head with a nuclear test, it will gain nothing but stiffer punishment from the international community.

"In fact, North Korea with nuclear weapons will not gain anything," Park said.

She made the remarks in a meeting at the National Assembly in Seoul with Reps. Hwang Woo-yea, chairman of the ruling Saenuri Party, and Moon Hee-sang, interim leader of the main opposition Democratic United Party (DUP). It was the first time Park has met the DUP leader since her election on Dec. 19.

Park said if the North presses ahead with the nuclear test plan in defiance of the international warning, it will face further isolation and a strong penalty from the United Nations and the international community as well as countries involved in six-party talks to end its nuclear programs.

The President-elect said the nuclear test plan poses a serious threat to security in the region.

Park pledged to exert maximun diplomatic efforts to deter provocations by North Korea at a time when power transfer is underway in South Korea.

She called for strong deterrence to help ensure security on the Korean Peninsula.

Park said under the "difficult" security situation on the Korean Peninsula, what is of importance is that the ruling and opposition parties become one.

She thanked Hwang and Moon for joining forces to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue.

After the meeting, the three leaders issued a joint statement urging the North to immediately scrap a nuclear test plan.

The statement said that "under any circumstances, we cannot tolerate a nuclear-armed North Korea."

Park is set to be sworn in as the country's first female president on Feb. 25.
