Japan is seeking to establish a national security council (NSC), according to Japanese media on Feb. 11.

NHK reported that the Japanese government plans to set up an experts' group tasked with creating an NSC.

The group will consist of about 10 members, including Shotaro Yachi, former vice minister offoreign affairs, and Ryoichi Oriki, former head of Japan's Self Defense Forces, the report said.

Originally, Prime Minister Shinjo Abe's government classified the establishment of an NSC as a long-term project.

However, the abduction of Japanese in Algeria last month prompted the Abe administration to accelerate steps on the creation of an NSC.

Sources said the Japanese government will submit to parliament an NSC bill in June at the earliest.
