The U.S. air force deployed two nuclear-capable B-2 stealth bombers to the Korean Peninsula Thursday, according to news reports.

The B-2 Spirit bombers conducted a firing drill over the waters in front of Geunsan, North Jeolla Province, the reports said.

The drill was construed as a strong warning to North Korea, which has threatened to start a nuclear war since the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution calling for tougher sanctions on North Korea for its third nuclear test on Feb. 12.

The stealth bombers took off from the Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri on the previous night, and arrived in the Korean Peninsula around noon, the reports said. After the firing drill, the bombers returned to its base.

The firing drill was part of the joint South Korea-U.S. Foal Eagle military exercises. The two-month exercises will continue through April 30.
