A 22-year-old photojournalist was gang raped Thursday while she was on her assignment to take pictures of an abandoned textile factory in Mumbai, India. It has been less than a year since a female university student died from a gang rape. Also, in June this year, a 10-year-old girl died in a hospital after violently being raped by a gang of 4 teenage boys, and earlier this month, a 7-year-old girl was gang raped in train in central India. The violent sexual crime rates have been rapidly going up and many are underage girls who were viciously gang raped and died.

The photojournalist was approached by five men Thursday when she was near the factory, offering to help her get permission to take pictures of inside of the factory. The men had the journalist’s colleague’s hands tied with a belt while they gang raped the woman. The journalist was transferred to a nearby hospital and is now in stable condition.

Since the death of a young university student from gang rape in New Delhi, Indian government passed new laws to reinforce harsher punishments for rape, stalking, voyeurism, sex trafficking, attacks, and more.

Mumbai authorities are now in search for the 5 men who attacked the journalist and her colleague.
