Lottery sales hit 5-year high in 2013

South Korea’s lottery ticket sales hit a five-year high of 3.23 trillion won in 2013, the government’s lottery commission said Tuesday.

The figure represents a 35 percent rise from 2.39 trillion won tallied in 2008, according to the Korea Lottery Commission under the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.

The comparable figure stood at 2.47 trillion won in 2009, 2.53 trillion won in 2010, 3.08 trillion won in 2011 and 3.19 trillion won in 2012. 

Online lotteries, called "Lotto," took the lion’s share of 2.98 trillion won last year, followed by offline lotteries including pension lotteries with 210.4 billion won and electronic lotteries via the mobile network with 33.5 billion won.
