Philip Seymour Hoffman, who won the Oscar for best actor for the 2005 biographical film "Capote," was found dead Sunday (local time) in his Manhattan apartment. He was 46.

The Oscar-winning actor was found dead of an apparent drug overdose, news reports said, quoting a New York police source.

He was found on the bathroom floor with a syringe in his arm, the reports said.

In its front-page obituary, the New York Times referred to Hoffman as "perhaps the most ambitious and widely admired American actor of his generation."
