More than four of 10 South Koreans were reluctant to pay for the cost of unification of the Korean Peninsula, a poll said Wednesday.

The survey of 1,001 people nationwide found that 44.3 percent of respondents said they had no willingness to share the cost of unification.

The poll, released by a research institute of Seoul National University, said that 31.9 percent of those questioned said they were willing to pay less than 50,000 won (US$48) per year for unification cost-sharing.

About 11.7 percent expressed their willingness to pay 50,000-100,000 won annually, while 8.7 percent and 1.2 percent said they will pay 100,000-300,000 won and more than 1 million won, respectively, according to the survey conducted between November and December last year.

The poll said an overwhelming majority of respondents showed a lukewarm attitude toward the unification of the peninsula.

About 45.8 percent of those questioned said there is no need to hurry to achieve the unification, while 18 percent said unification is not necessary. Some 10.2 percent said they had no interest in the unification issue.

Only 25.8 percent said unification should be achieved as soon as possible, the poll said.

The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
