Afghan Deputy governer was shot dead in Kandahar

Samim Khpolwak, a spokesman for the provincial governor said, On Sunday, a gunman in southern Kandahar province attacked Deputy Governor Abdul Qadeem Patyall, shooting at him through the window of a classroom at Kandahar University.

The official Tawab Ghorzang told AFP.that Abdul Qadeem Patyall was rushed to hospital but died of his injuries there.

Patyall, who was studying to become a teacher, was seriously wounded and later died, Khpolwak said.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani sent condolences to Patyall's family and described his killing as a terrorist attack. A government delegation also launched an investigation into the attack.

Kandahar's Mirwaiz hospital also confirmed Patyal's death. "It is hard to believe that Patyall, the deputy governor of Kandahar province is no longer among us. Rest in peace," Ghorzang said in a tweet.

The last major political assassination in Kandahar occurred in July when a suicide bomber killed Hashmat Karzai, a cousin of the country's last president Hamid Karzai.
