SEOUL -- Formula E, a city-based single-seater electric car motor racing championship, has agreed to hold its championship in an undecided South Korean city from 2020.

In a ceremony last week n Seoul, Formula E founder and CEO Alejandro Agag signed an agreement with JSM Holdings head Moon Jae-sik involved in leisure, entertainment and sports promotion. A South Korean city would host the Formula E championship from 2020 to 2025. The venue will be selected later, based on a comprehensive review of road conditions, driver safety and economic benefits.

Formula E has been sanctioned by FIA, the governing body for auto racing events. Racing takes place on temporary city-center street circuits. The inaugural championship of Formula E, officially the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, held in Beijing in September 2014. FIA President Jean Todt developed the idea as a means to demonstrate the potential of sustainable mobility.

In a news release carried on its website on November 30, Formula E said the championship would be staged in the center of Seoul. "I'm extremely excited about the prospect of bringing Formula E to Seoul and this news is a great first step in the right direction," Agag was quoted as saying.

Formula E said the first race is expected to take place in season six as part of a five-year agreement, citing public squares in central Seoul as favorable venues which should be approved by city authorities and the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

"This event will show the ongoing development of electric vehicle technology from global automotive brands, using the platform of a truly exciting and competitive racing series," Moon said. "It'll also contribute in attracting tourists from China and Japan, where interest towards the growth of clean transportation and motorsport is high."
