SEOUL -- An IT service arm of South Korea's retail conglomerate Shinsegae teamed up with SK Telecom to develop 5G-based business models and services that would provide a new user experience in distribution and logistics.

Shinsegae Internet & Commerce (I&C) signed a memorandum of understanding Tuesday with SK Telecom and its subsidiary SK Broadband, a broadband internet access provider, on technical cooperation in developing innovative business models and services for Shinsegae department stores, a hypermarket chain called Emart and various shopping malls.

They agreed to use 5G-based new information and communication technologies such as mobile edge computing, augmented reality and virtual reality that would enable customers to experience futuristic stores in parking, shopping, acquisition of product information, commodity settlement and security.

Customers can use AR and VR services for new shopping experiences. For example, a real Shinsegae store can be implemented on a digital platform, allowing customers to shop with VR conveniently, while offline stores provide product information easily and conveniently by using AR.

It is possible to accurately identify customers with sensors and recommend desired products based on their shopping experience data and customers can securely make automatic payments.
