SEOUL -- A 5.08 kilometer-long bar rice cake has been listed in Guinness World Records as the longest of its kind in the world. The rounded rice cake called Garaetteok in Korean symbolizes a long life.

Guinness said on its website that the new record was achieved by Dangjin City Mayor Kim Hong-Jang and members of the Dangjin branch of the Korea Tteok (rice cake) Food Processor Association. The previous record was 4.43 kilometers, set in October 2009.

The new record was set on November 11, 2018, when some 50 people used 4.5 tons of rice to make the rice cake, which is 3cm in diameter, in an event at a tourist site in Dangjin, about 80 km (50 miles) southwest of Seoul. A wide variety of rice cakes exist in many different cultures, especially in Asia. Koreans use slices of the stick-like rounded rice cake to eat Tteokguk, a traditional soup, on New Year's day.
