SEOUL -- LGU+, a mobile carrier in South Korea, teamed up with a domestic company to verify a self-driving shuttle service in a residential area in the central city of Sejong, which has been designated as a testbed for smart city platforms.

LGU+ said on Wednesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Chemtronics to provide solutions and technologies for a self-driving shuttle service. They would complete related quality tests and certification sometime next month while Sejong will launch a demonstration service of self-driving low-speed shuttle services as early as the first half of this year.

LGU+ will provide a 5G network, a dynamic precision map, and high-precision measurement solutions. Chemtronics supports technologies related to vehicle-to-everything (V2X), which passes information from a vehicle to any entity and incorporates other more specific types of communication to ensure road safety and traffic efficiency.

Sejong's smart city platform would feature future technologies such as autonomous driving, grid-based energy control, AI-based disaster control and smart farming, all linked to a 5G network. A smart city uses different types of electronic sensors to collect and share data. Because it depends on an integrated web of devices and networks, fast and secure internet connections are needed.
