SK Telecom (SKT) joined hands with SM to present a 3D mixed reality (MR) performance at Super Junior's paid online concert on May 31. The performance was designed to showcase new content based on the latest ICT technology to global audiences online.
The MR image of Choi Si-won, a Super Junior member, was big enough to fill the 12-meter-high concert hall, moving naturally as if he appeared on the actual stage and talking to the audience. SKT completed 3D mixed reality content in just one day after filming Choi for an hour. By utilizing 3D modeling and animation technology, the high-resolution MR image was created to blend naturally with the actual concert hall.
SKT's Jump Studio that utilizes Microsoft's technology to create realistic holographic images opened in April. It's the first MR studio in Asia to adopt Microsoft's technology.
MR is a hybrid of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). An MR headset projects 3D holographic images in real-time to maximize the viewing experience of users. MR is used to remote-control heavy equipment or control robot surgeons. At SKT's MR studio, users can create MR, VR and AR content for various applications that would be used in entertainment, education and medical sectors.
The studio automated much of 3D modeling work with AI, cloud, 3D processing and rendering technologies. It uses 106 cameras to shoot 360 degrees and up to 60 frames per second, automatically compresses high-capacity video data into mobile streaming capacity and supports video formats that are highly compatible with existing media production systems.
Creators can freely expand, shrink, and reproduce 3D mixed reality content. It is easy to shoot in an indoor studio without using large-scale filming equipment. SKT plans to provide MR content to customers in various fields such as entertainment, advertising and games.
"MR content will change the paradigm of entertainment such as performances, movies and dramas," SKT's 5GX biz and service head Jeon Jin-soo said, adding that the use of MR technology will be rapidly expanded in a non-face-to-face era.
