LGU+ secures 5G content export deal from Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom

SEOUL -- Chunghwa Telecom, a top telecom company in Taiwan, will use 5G virtual reality content and multi-view technology from LG Uplus (LGU+), a mobile carrier in South Korea, to secure a competitive edge over domestic rivals ahead of the official roll-out of commercial 5G services in July. LGU+ agreed to provide various VR know-how in real time.

LGU+ said that it has signed a contract with Chunghwa Telecom to supply about 180 items of VR content, including K-pop, and 5G technologies such as multi-view of U+VR, a 5G platform that allows users to enjoy K-pop performances, games, cartoons, live sports and movies with 3D 4K ultra-high-definition resolution. Chunghwa will share LGU+'s various VR know-how to realize the best quality of its 5G service.

LGU+ seeks to win 5G export contracts with Southeast Asian and European companies. "About 30 foreign telecom companies are showing a lot of interest in U+5G," said LGU+ AR/VR service head Choi Yoon-ho.

In October 2019, LGU+ forged a strategic partnership with China Telecom for cooperation in 5G. They agreed to push for joint production and investment in AR and VR content, cooperate in 5G service solutions as well as cloud games, data roaming and intent of things. LGU+ has concluded similar deals have been concluded with Hong Kong Telecom and Japan's KDDI.

LGU+ has jumped into the cloud virtual reality game market based on a 5G network that can take advantage of 5G's ultra-low latency characteristics. 5G cloud VR games have the advantage of streaming high-quality games without complicated processes such as cable connection and device installation. VR Live is a solution that can provide live 3D VR broadcasts.
