SEOUL -- LG Uplus (LGU+) took an early lead in the race to commercialize a true 5G network using standalone technology with the successful demonstration of core technology related to high-quality voice services in a commercial network as South Korea steps up preparations for the rollout of upgraded 5G mobile services.

LGU+said it is ready to provide stable and high-quality 5G services by introducing voice over 5G (Vo5G) that allows users to make calls while using 5G data services at the same time. "We succeeded in securing core technologies for the commercialization of 5G standalone mode through this commercial test," said LGU+'s network technology unit head Park Song-cheol.

In 2019, South Korea commercialized 5G mobile networks based on non-standalone (NSA) standards, using 4G infrastructure before switching to 5G standalone (SA) that improves efficiency in massive data traffic and enables ultra-low latency and much higher capacity. Mobile carriers have developed various technologies and equipment related to SA.

5G standalone requires voice calls based on evolved packet system (EPS) fallback or Vo5G. EPS fallback is recommended for early 5G system deployments. Vo5G will help telecom service providers to provide customers with substantially improved voice capabilities with extra features like ultra-high-definition voice communications.

SK Telecom (SKT) has completed preparations through successful data communication in a 5G commercial network. The company said that communication access time is twice as fast as 5G NSA and data processing efficiency is about three times more efficient.
