SEOUL -- Hancom MDS, the embedded software wing of South Korea's comprehensive IT group Hancom, has forged a partnership with Motion Gestures, a Canadian artificial intelligence-based motion tracking technology company, to embed the technology into Hancom MDS' software.

Motion tracking technology incorporates cameras or sensors that detect and recognize movements. Such technology allows people to control machines and other devices such as display panels by moving hands in the air.

Technologies that track body movements are attracting global attention in the COVID-19 era as they require no physical contact and prevent the risk of being infected with highly contagious diseases. Some ATM machines are equipped with a virtual keypad that can detect hand movements without touching a display touch input panel.

Hancom MDS said in a statement that Motion Gestures would provide its artificial intelligence-based hand tracking and gesture recognition software for color, infrared and depth cameras. Motion Gesture's software is designed for embedded applications in diverse business sectors, including automotive, appliances, robotics, wearables, smart home, AR/VR, healthcare, retail, hospitality, and videogames.

Hancom MDS said that "contactless" interaction technology would become one of the mainstream technologies highlighted by a COVID-19 pandemic. "We firmly believe that COVID-19 will accelerate the trend to contactless interaction in a diverse set of industries and Motion Gestures’ AI software can help firms make such transition," Hancom MDS' innovation business group president Lee Chang-youl said.

While other motion tracking software requires a time-taking process of learning gestures, Motion Gesture's AI-based software can create a gesture interface within a few minutes without the need for additional programming or data input.
