SEOUL -- "Peninsula," a zombie action blockbuster film directed by Yeon Snag-ho, has topped Canada's box-office chart for the first week of August, the film's distributor said.

NEW, a South Korean film distributor, said in a statement on August 11 that Peninsula released in 49 cinemas in Canadian cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver has earned $12,000 to take the No. 1 spot in the box-office chart. The zombie film is scheduled to be released in the United States on August 21.

Peninsula is a sequel to the 2016 zombie action film "Train to Busan". The new film starring actor Kang Dong-won and actress Lee Jung-hyun depicts a story about people struggling to survive in South Korea, years after it was devastated by hoards of zombies.

The film has brought a fresh wind to South Korea's coronavirus-stricken film industry. It has garnered some 3.7 million moviegoers so far since it was released at home on July 21. Peninsula has currently earned more than $45 million across 15 countries.
