Amazon signs game publishing agreement with S. Korean game publisher

SEOUL --  The subsidiary of Smilegate, a South Korean game publisher, has secured a bridgehead into U.S. and European game markets with a deal to exclusively release games using the channels of Amazon's game publishing wing.

Smilegate RPG said on August 20 that its has signed an exclusive game publishing contract with Amazon Games, which plans to release a cloud gaming service backed by Amazon Web Services, the world's largest cloud computing platform, next year.

Cloud gaming allows gamers to remotely connect smartphones or tablet PCs to servers, PCs and consoles to play the latest games that require top computing hardware. Amazon operates Twitch, a video streaming platform that is globally popular among gamers. Global tech companies such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon have developed cloud gaming platforms.

"By utilizing the two companies' expertise, we plan to introduce our AAA-class game titles to western users," Smilegate RPG CEO Jee Won-gil was quoted as saying. The company would release a killer game title for American and European gamers by the end of next year.

Smilegate founded in 2002 has released popular games such as CrossFire, a PC multiplayer first-person-shooter game, and Lost Ark, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). CrossFire is extremely popular in China. Amazon's cloud services will help Smilegate make a foray into the cloud gaming market.
