Daejeon City to lead state project for AI-based real-time monitoring system for subway trains

SEOUL -- Using artificial intelligence and edge computing, the central city of Daejeon will lead a state project to demonstrate a real-time subway train monitoring system that would reduce the work burden of human monitoring and prevent accidents. If abnormal activities are detected, the system will alert its control tower and the engine driver.

Normally, an AI-based system is connected via a cloud network to distribute the computing load. The central server computer works as the brain while each node delivers the outcome. An edge AI or AI edge system allows an AI application to be operated on local hardware connected to a network node to minimize latency. The AI edge method is ideal in managing connected devices such as internet of things (IoT) sensors.

Daejeon and Daejeon Express Transit Corporation, the operator of the central city's subway line, were selected for an 800 million-won government project to demonstrate an AI edge camera monitoring system. A train of four cars will be equipped with the system to autonomously detect abnormal activities such as illegal filming, violence, vandalism and sick people.

"We will roll out policies that utilize AI to manage the safety of citizens inside subway stations and trains," Daejeon's science industry bureau head Myung Roh-cheung said in a statement on May 7.
