SEOUL -- Samsung Display, a major flat panel maker in South Korea, will lead a state project to develop an oxide thin-film transistor with ultra-high resolution, which is considered a core technology for next-generation mobile displays. The project is aimed at securing oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) technology, which is 10 times faster in the speed of electron transfer, by 2024.

An oxide TFT is a particular kind of field-effect transistor made by depositing thin films of a semiconductor active layer as well as the dielectric layer and metallic contacts over a supporting substrate. Samsung Display said it was selected as the host company of a national task of developing ultra-high-resolution oxide TFT.

Mobile displays installed in smartphones and other devices require TFTs with faster electronic movement speed as higher resolution increases the density of pixels and the integration of TFT circuits that control pixels. Samsung Display said it would develop new oxide TFT technologies for the production of low-power ultra-resolution mobile panels.

Samsung Display would develop oxide TFT technology for ultra-high resolution mobile OLEDs, which can drastically reduce production costs and power consumption. "This research is meaningful in that next-generation TFT technology will be developed with an industrial ecosystem of display industries such as large companies, SMEs, universities, and research institutes working together to strengthen technological competitiveness," said Chu Hye-yong, head of Samsung Display's process research team.
