SEOUL -- South Korean mobile carriers unveiled a joint "V Coloring" service. It is a subscription-based video ringback tone service that plays a short-form video selected or created by users while their mobile phone calls are connected. The service was first launched by SK Telecom to create a fun and interesting experience for customers.

The joint service by SK Telecom (SKT), KT and LG Uplus (LGU+) will begin on May 27. Customers can download an app from Google Play or One Store. The app provides about 4,000 types of videos, and customers can use content they filmed or downloaded through smartphones. Since the service was first introduced by SKT in September 2020, V Coloring has accumulated some 240 million views of content.

V Coloring has 1.5 million subscribers. SKT predicts the app will grow fast once it becomes a basic feature of smartphones because it can be used by individual customers or as a means of corporate advertisement. Marketing will be carried out jointly through dedicated social networking service channels.

"The V coloring service, which SKT started in September last year, is now available to all customers of the three mobile telecom companies," SKT's subscription media head Choi So-jeong said in a statement on May 26, vowing to discover the types of content customers prefer through data analysis.

V Coloring is the next version of a ringback tone service called "Coloring" launched by SKT in 2002 that has gained huge popularity by allowing customers to use music and other audio as a way to express themselves.

Through content sharing and joint marketing, each company will provide a high-quality V Coloring service by expanding the supply of content on popular entertainers and celebrities only available in V Coloring. LGU+'s XR service head Choi Yoon-ho said discussions would be held to provide high-quality content owned by each company to other company subscribers.

Starting with a V Coloring challenge in July with TikTok, a video-sharing social networking service that is used to make short-form videos, the three companies would provide various promotions for customers to participate directly.
