A steam turbine generates electricity at a thermal power plant using steam. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is South Korea's largest gas steam turbine maker for large-sized power plants. Small and medium-sized turbines have been provided by German or Japanese makers. In early September, KT Engineering signed a cooperation agreement with World Power Tech, the sole maker of steam turbines for small and medium-sized plants in South Korea.
The renewable energy company said in a statement on September 23 that the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Chang Won Enertech, a domestic industrial waste processing company based in the southern port city of Changwon, to build a steam turbine at Enertech's thermal power plant. The power plant uses solid recovered fuel (SRF), a high-yield source of energy produced from recovered waste.
The localized steam turbine will attract customers with its affordable price and high performance, KT Engineering said, adding it would establish a steam turbine facility and offer an EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) service for Chang Won Enertech.
"Through this MOU, we will do our best to help our partner Chang Won Enertech's facility contribute to the realization of net-zero carbon community as well as play its original role of a waste processor and steam energy provider," KT Engineering's business division director Lee Soo-gil was quoted as saying.
