SEOUL -- Hyundai Oilbank, a refining unit of South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries, created a digital all-in-one energy station inside a virtual world called metaverse. The virtual gas station was set up to promote the major refiner's business areas that range from fossil fuels to clean energy fuels including hydrogen.

Metaverse is a virtual space where users can participate in many different social and economic activities by creating their own personalized characters called "avatars." The virtual world can be accessed using a smartphone, PC, or a virtual reality (VR) headset. According to market research firm Emergen Research, the global metaverse market will grow from $47.7 billion in 2020 to $828.95 billion in 2028. Zepeto, a metaverse platform created by top web service company Naver, enables 250 million users to create their own 3D avatars using face recognition.

Hyundai Oilbank said in a statement on March 3 that the hybrid energy station was established in Zepeto, a popular metaverse platform accessible through smart devices and PC. Users can access Hyundai Oilbank's virtual channel and use the gas station's facilities to fuel up vehicles with hydrogen, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and electricity.
