SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics will work with Western Digital, a data storage company in the United States, to lead the standardization of next-generation zoned storage technologies that can efficiently operate large-capacity storage used by data centers or companies. They will develop software application models to expand the adoption of technologies.

Zone storage classifies and stores data to efficiently operate large-capacity storage. A data center is an all-in-one infrastructure for data storage servers, communication and network equipment and computing devices. Data centers are considered the key aspect of the Fourth Industrial Revolution Technology that requires a super-fast data connection and powerful computing capabilities.

Samsung and Western Digital will initially focus on creating a vigorous ecosystem for zoned storage solutions so that companies can deal with an extremely complicated and large amount of data. Samsung said the technology can be used to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) and improve the quality of service (QoS).

"Our collaborative efforts will embrace hardware and software ecosystems to ensure that as many customers as possible can reap the benefits of this highly important technology," Samsung's memory sales and marketing division head Han Ji-min said in a statement on March 30.

Focusing on enterprise and cloud applications, Samsung said the partnership would spur a range of collaborations around technology standardization and software development for data placement, processing and fabrics (D2PF) storage technologies. End-users can have confidence that these emerging storage technologies will have support from multiple device vendors as well as from vertically integrated hardware and software companies.

Samsung has been participating in a workgroup launched by Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) to lead the development of zone storage technologies. Samsung developed zoned namespaces (ZNS), which divide the entire storage space of solid-state drives (SSDs) into independent zones, in June 2021.
