The biomass facility in Jincheon about 75 kilometers (46 miles) south of Seoul will turn wood fuel into charcoal. The steam energy generated will be utilized to operate the CJ Blossom Campus, a food factory run by CJ Cheil Jedang, to produce convenience food products. Construction is to begin in 2023 for commercial operation in 2025.
Biomass is plant-based material used as fuel to produce heat or electricity. Examples are wood and wood residues, energy crops, agricultural residues, and waste from industry, farms and households. CJ Cheil Jedang said that its biomass facility would produce 50 tons of steam per hour by using gas generated by burning wood with low-temperature pyrolysis technology.
When completed, the facility would help reduce 44,000 tons of greenhouse gases generated at its food factory every year, or 10 percent of total greenhouse gases generated at 17 dimes factories in 2021. The company aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2030.
