SEOUL -- A new bulletproof helmet with maximum performance and minimum weight has been developed in South Korea's state project to protect soldiers' lives by localizing aromatic polyamide (aramid), a class of heat-resistant and strong synthetic fibers used as a bulletproof material that has been imported.

The state-run Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement (KRIT) said that the new bullet-proof helmet developed together with two domestic companies would be distributed to the military in the second half of 2022.

The new helmet has the same performance or more than that of advanced countries such as the United States, the institute said, adding that it can prevent five types of debris, including a 9mm pistol bullet and maintain bulletproof performance even after being flooded by seawater as well as in high and low temperatures.

"The new bulletproof helmet is meaningful in developing it for soldiers to operate more safely. Especially the localization of bulletproof basic materials will have a high industrial impact," KRIT head Lim Young-il said in a statement on May 23.

An ergonomic design was applied to the shape and size of the helmet by measuring the head shape of about 600 people. A foam pad interior material was adopted for shock-absorbing by laminating thin bulletproof materials in multiple layers and improving the content of resin for material coating. Night vision and communication equipment can be attached to the outside.
