SEOUL -- Hyundai Mobis, the parts-making unit of South Korea's Hyundai auto group, unveiled a smart cabin controller that can monitor and analyze various biometric signals such as driver's posture, heart rate, and brain wave in real time to ensure safe driving or prevent drunk and drowsy driving.

The system consists of four sensors, a controller that analyzes bio-signal information, and software logic. This is the world's first healthcare-only controller that can integrate and analyze multiple bio-signals, Hyundai Mobis said, adding that it would play a role as a moving health examination center.

Hyundai Mobis said Its strategy is to actively target new markets by combining bio-health care technology with high added value ahead of the era of autonomous driving "Software designed to fit healthcare functions into mobility and controller the development of technology to control them are our key competitiveness," Hyundai Mobis' R&D division head Cheon Jae-seung said in a statement on June 23.

Based on Hyundai Mobis' bio-signal database, Cheon said that his company would upgrade the smart cabin technology to prevent motion sickness, manage stress, and block drunk driving.

Each sensor detects biometric signals and transmits related information to the controller that sends a warning through the vehicle's navigation system, cluster, or head-up displays. A 3D camera can photograph the passenger's posture in three dimensions, and a sensor measures brain waves flowing around the ear. If the driver's stress index is high, an electrocardiogram sensor mounted on the steering wheel recommends autonomous driving.

The fourth sensor measures temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide. If the level of carbon dioxide level is high, the window is opened or changed to external circulation. Hyundai Mobis said the new technology can be improved to guide the car to the emergency room in emergency situations such as cardiac arrest.
