SEOUL -- SK ecoplant, an environmental and energy solution provider affiliated with  South Korea's SK Group, joined hands with China's top data center provider GDS to pioneer a market for the establishment of data centers applied with an eco-friendly power supply solution based on fuel cells in Southeast Asia.

Under a collaboration agreement, SK ecoplant said it would provide eco-friendly power supply solutions including the supply of fuel cells and engineering, procurement and construction. GDS is responsible for operating data centers.

For the uninterrupted operation of data centers, it is essential to secure a stable and efficient power system. SK ecoplant and GDS would use fuel cells, an eco-friendly distributed power source that can supply high-efficiency and stable power, as power sources for data centers.

The tie-up with GDS underlines SK ecoplant's efforts to nurture a data center power supply solution as a new business model. "Our strategic cooperation with GDS, the No. 1 data center company in China, will be the cornerstone for expanding the scope of our fuel cell business and pioneering overseas markets," SK ecoplant CEO Park Kyung-il said in a statement on August 22.

As a major waste management company, SK ecoplant has actively promoted eco-friendly businesses. In February 2022, the company acquired TES Envirocorp, a Singapore-based provider of synchronized electronic waste (E-waste) management solutions. The acquisition is aimed at securing its solid presence in the recycling of discarded electrical or electronic devices such as waste electric vehicle batteries.
