SEOUL -- Hanwha Systems, a key defense contractor affiliated with South Korea's Hanwha Group, has clinched an arms contract worth about 160 billion won ($113 million) to provide thermal optic aiming devices for K15 light machine guns. It is equipped with telescope sight so that users can quickly aim and shoot day and night.

Under a contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), a state arms procurement body controlled by the defense ministry, Hanwha Systems said it would deliver 14,000 PAS-18K thermal optic aiming devices by November 2025. The PAS-18K can accurately observe the battlefield even in bad weather situations such as night fog.

The device can be linked with a future personal combat system and effectively overpower massed troops. "We will do our best to supply it at the right time as the aiming device can become a key equipment that can improve the accuracy rate of shooting and strengthen the combat power and survival of soldiers," Kim Young-ho, head of Hanwha System's command and control business, said in a statement on November 2.

The 5.56mm K15 gun weighing 7.2 kilograms was manufactured by S&T Motiv to replace the old K3 light machine gun weighing 6.85 kg. It features improved accuracy, reliability, easy operation, and a smoother butt recoil plate to reduce the shooting impact. Soldiers can adjust the length of K15 according to their physical condition.
