SEOUL -- South Korea's top telecom service provider, KT, has partnered with Coway, a leading home appliance subscription service provider, to develop an artificial intelligence-based smart home service targeting the global market, which is projected to reach $195.3 billion by 2025.

A smart home solution is basically a network of home appliances and internet of things (IoT) sensors hooked onto a home network managed by AI. All devices interact with human masters and themselves to offer the best home environment. Air conditioners will autonomously control the home's temperature.

KT and Coway will jointly develop smart home services to release combined subscription plans including KT's internet and mobile plans and Coway's home appliance rental subscriptions. KT's AI-based voice assistant speaker will be installed in Coway's upcoming products.

Coway, launched in 1989 as a water purifier rental service company, is now South Korea's top home appliance subscription service company that provides long-term rental services for water purifiers, air purifiers, bidets, bed mattresses, massage chairs, and sofas. The company's water purifiers are also popular in Southeast Asian countries, especially in Malaysia.

KT's transformation division head Yoon Kyung-lim said in a statement on November 30 that the two companies would increase their presence in the world's home environment appliance market based on Coway and KT's digital-based living environment service capabilities.
