HVDC converts alternating current into high-voltage DC and can send large amounts of current far away. 525 kilovolts (kV) is the highest voltage among HVDC cables. In October 2022, LS Cable said that the company completed long-term reliability tests of HVDC undersea and underground cables to recognize their stability and functionality.
LS Cable said that the company will provide HVDC cables worth 400 billion won to Vattenfall's Vanguard Offshore Wind Farm, scheduled to break ground in 2023. The 1.8 gigawatt-capacity wind farm will power some 1.95 British homes with renewable energy.
In October, the South Korean cable maker signed a 240-billion-won HDVC cable supply deal with Vattenfall for a sister wind farm project called Boreas, also scheduled to start construction in 2023 near the coast of Norfolk. "We have proven our capabilities by winning a series of supply deals in Europe, the heart of renewable energy," LS Cable said in a statement on December 12.
LS Cable targets the global market where the demand for high-voltage cables is rapidly increasing due to the adoption of renewable energy sources. LS Cable has also said that the company will focus on grabbing large-scale HDVC deals in Europe and North America.
