SEOUL -- A manufacturing technology for kitchen detergents developed by Aekyung, a major hygiene product maker in South Korea, won government approval as green technology. The new eco-friendly method that uses natural extracts can replace synthetic additives with various chemical substances.

Most chemical components in synthetic preservatives are decomposed in sewage treatment plants. One of the main components of synthetic preservatives is surfactants which weaken the surface tension between two liquids or interfacial tension between a liquid and a solid. However, the chemical component is not easily decomposed. If the component is released into to the ocean or rivers without being properly decomposed, it can block the supply of oxygen and light to organisms, damaging aquatic plants' photosynthesis.

Aekyung said in a statement on January 5 that the detergent manufacturing technology obtained green technology certification. The method received also green certification in 2021 from the Korea Institute of Environmental Industry, a state agency under the startup ministry. "We will try hard to create green solutions for a virtuous cycle of resources through the expansion of eco-friendly technologies and products," an Aekyung official said in a statement.

Green certification is provided after the government confirms whether the technology can contribute to sustainable growth. LABCCiN, a hygiene material brand affiliated with Aekyung, also received green technology certification for an antibacterial detergent. LABCCiN's technology is capable of cleaning 99.9 percent of antibacterial materials.
