Virtual effects (VFX), which incorporates computer graphics (CG) elements, is often used by filmmakers to produce imagery that is difficult to be filmed or doesn't exist in the real world. In June 2021, SK Telecom (SKT) opened a VFX studio with two LED wall stages that can create realistic graphics to remove the need for location shooting. Through the studio, the mobile carrier aims to strengthen its content production capability and expand partnerships with global media companies.
SKT said in a statement on February 10 that an eight-week curriculum would be provided for 10 people working in the film production industry. Students will utilize "in-camera visual effects (ICVFX)," a smart technique that enables users to film multiple scenes and locations after setting up LED walls in front of actors in a studio. With ICVFX, LED walls create unprecedented levels of lighting and reflection accuracy. Less time spent on lighting and tweaking creates more time to focus on capturing the actual shoot.
The curriculum also contains a course that educates members to create a short film of five minutes long or less. "We will popularize the virtual production ecosystem in the South Korean film sector," SKT official Kim Hyuk said in a statement.
