SEOUL -- YuA, a virtual artist created by South Korean game publisher "Smilegate" and a visual effects company, released a remake of "Violet Fragrance," a folk song that gained explosive popularity in the 1990s. Through the single, the 20-year-old artist expressed her feelings for her first love.

YuA with some 675,000 followers on Instagram has a goofy personality and enjoys eating ice screams. Her favorite song is "Dancing in the Moonlight" by Toploader. The virtual influencer debuted as a singer in 2022 through a dance song titled "I Like That." The music video for the debut song was watched by more than 7 million people on YouTube.

The virtual singer rolled out the remake of veteran singer-songwriter Kang Su-sie's Violet Fragrance on March 6. The new version is slightly more cheerful and rhythmical than the original track released in 1990 with a strong dreamy vibe. The music video, which shows the beautiful night scenery of Seoul, was also released. YuA's remake will be showcased on some 120 music streaming platforms in about 180 countries.

"I love 'Violet Fragrance' by Kang Su-sie. YuA's version reminds me of old memories," YouTube user Park See-young said after YuA's music video was uploaded. Yang Si-on, a famous K-pop producer who participated in hit songs including "Uncle" by singer-actress IU, was involved in creating the remake.

Many virtual humans have debuted as singers in South Korea. MAVE:, a virtual K-pop idol created by the metaverse wing of South Korea's leading game publisher Netmarble, released its debut album "Pandora Box" in January 2023. The music video for the five-member girl band's title song garnered about 800,000 views on YouTube only 20 hours after its release.
