HiNAS 2.0 is an artificial intelligence-based solution capable of recognizing surrounding ships and detecting various risk factors. Steering orders are issued in real-time by recognizing the surrounding environment such as weather and wave height.
HD Hyundai said in a statement that Avikus will carry out the verification project with a domestic maritime classification society and a shipping company. The one-year project set to begin in August 2023 will apply HiNAS 2.0 to a cargo ship weighing 325,000 tons.
"This project is significant in that it is the world's first project to quantitatively verify the efficacy of fuel saving and carbon emission reduction of autonomous navigation based on actual sailing data," Avikus CEO Lim Do-hyeong said in a statement on March 16.
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vessels by 30 percent by 2025, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a U.N. maritime safety agency, has adopted compulsory energy-efficiency measures. South Korean shipbuilders were prompted by the regulation to develop green technologies for ships.
