SEOUL -- A state investment of 10.5 billion won ($7.9 million) will be allocated to construct a massive electromagnetic interference shielding test facility in South Korea's southern industrial city of Daegu. The testbed will provide a safe environment for researchers and private companies to demonstrate autonomous vehicles and drones.

An electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding facility plays a crucial role in the development phase of wireless communication technologies, particularly those utilized in mobile objects like drones and cars. If connected cars are impacted by EMI during a testing process, researchers may obtain peculiar and distorted results. Unwanted electromagnetic waves have the potential to damage or disrupt sensitive electric circuits and wireless equipment, leading to malfunctions.

The Ministry of Science and ICT said on May 29 that an EMI shielding facility called "Electromagnetic Playground" will be built in Daegu by October 2023. The testbed will incorporate various smart solutions such as a motion capture system capable of detecting movements of drones in real-time and a wind generator. The Electromagnetic Playground will consist of a 600-square meter-wide EMI shielding space and a development support facility of about 900 square meters.

"We will be able to meet demands of local companies such as the ones in the Seongseo's industrial complex and Daegu's state industrial complex when the Electromagnetic Playground is completed," the science ministry's official Choi Woo-hyuk said in a statement on May 29. Choi added the completion of the facility would lay the groundwork for small and medium-sized venture capital firms.

In March 2023, the government of North Chungcheong Province revealed its plan to construct an EMI shielding facility near Cheongju some 110 kilometers (68 miles) south of Seoul by 2024. The testbed will house autonomous car testing grounds including a track, an area simulating an urban residential environment, a control tower, and an off-road track.

South Korea's largest autonomous vehicle testbed K-City is situated in Hwaseong southwest of Seoul. It is a 320,000 square meter-wide testing ground with a track and other facilities that will provide a city-like area to generate situations such as the disruption of GPS signals, vehicle-to-everything communication failure, and crowded roads.
