SEOUL -- South Korea's shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will work with the Canadian branch of Babcock, a defense company based in Britain, to combine key technologies for submarines. Using the combined technologies, Babcock would export submarines to foreign nations.

The agreement was made at MADEX 2023, an international maritime defense industry exhibition held in South Korea's southern port city of Busan, HD Hyundai Heavy said on June 7. "We should be able to create synergy if the two firms with the world's top technology in shipbuilding and defense sectors cooperate," HD Hyundai Heavy's vice chairman Han Young-seuk said in a statement.

The two companies worked together in 2021 to develop a light aircraft carrier weighing about 30,000 tons. The vessel, set to be completed by 2033, would be South Korea's first aircraft carrier.

HD Hyundai Heavy built the Sejong the Great-class destroyer, the first Aegis destroyer in South Korea. The shipbuilder also created a 3,000-ton submarine named "Dosan Ahn Chang-ho." It has constructed some 80 combat ships and exported 14 naval vessels.

Various companies showcased naval weapon systems at MADEX 2023. Hanwha Systems, a key defense contractor affiliated with Hanwha Group, presented its anti-drone system capable of detecting and neutralizing unexpected drone attacks.
